National park Lahemaa

Tour to Lahemaa national park. Estonia is rich in historical and natural places of interest. And Tallinn is not only the Old town. During this day trip you will see eastern part of Tallinn, Northern coast of Estonia and visit largest national park in Estonia in one day.

We will depart from the city centre  and driving through the largest district of Tallinn, built in 1970s – 80s for the specialists coming from all over Soviet Union to prepare Tallinn for Olympic yachting regatta.

Driving out of Tallin we will see the stone burials of the Bronze Age, where the bodies of the dead were surrounded with the holy circles.

Our first stop will be Jagala – the largest waterfall in Estonia. River in the limestone canyon, forest and the roar of the waterfall creating an atmosphere attracting campers nature lovers and photographers.

Several miles from the waterfall and we will see castle Kiiu – the smallest in Europe. It was built in the 16th century, suffered from artillery fire of Ivan the Terrible army during the Livonian war and was completely restored in the 20th century.

Half an hour more listening to the interesting stories and we are crossing the border of Lahemaa. Name of the park translated from Estonian means “The land of Bays”. Huge park on the northern coast of Estonia has 4 peninsulas and 4 bays. Untouched nature, virgin forests and boulders idolized by ancient tribes.

We will visit fishermen’s village of the 19th century – Altja, where people were not only fishing but also smuggling alcohol to Finland during the abolition period.

We will visit one of a kind “captain’s village” – Kasmu, this place had its own captains school and more than 150 captains set sail  from this small village.

We will walk the most picturesque nature trail of Lahemaa – the bog walk. The timber path is made on the surface of the bog, so we’ll get to the very centre of it, where usually nor people, nor animals can go, but we will not even get our feet wet. We’ll see beautiful small lakes in the middle of the bog, different kinds of mosses and if we’ll be there in the right season, we can see the bog’s vegetation flowering in different colors. It is very convenient to observe the bog and take pictures from the wooden watch tower in the middle of the bog.

But it’s not only nature National park is famous for, on the territory we’ll also find two magnificent manor houses that belonged to the noble knights. We’ll see one of them – Palmse and go inside of the other one – Sagadi. After the lunch in a real fishermen’s inn, we will head back to Tallinn, taking with us photos and unforgettable memories of this wonderful place – Lahemaa.
